Introduction to Firefighter Confined Spaces Safety

The majority of confined space rescue incidents involve unconscious victims and require complex rescue operations. Fatalities and injuries are often preventable, and they are usually due to a lack of recognition of confined spaces, lack of or inadequate air quality testing and monitoring prior to entry, and lack of a well-planned rescue operation.

Not all firefighters are trained in confined space rescue operations, and confined space rescue attempts should never be made unless you have the proper training. Rescuers who are not properly trained may be overcome by the hazardous conditions in the confined space and become victims themselves.
