Rescue Attendant

The attendant is stationed outside of the confined space to monitor the conditions and locations of the authorized entrant. The attendant must remain in constant communication with the entrant and is responsible for alerting the entrant of the need to evacuate. The attendant must be able to complete the following duties:

  • Know the hazards that may be faced during entry
  • Know the behavioral effects of exposure (the attendant can order evacuation if any exposure signs or symptoms are detected)
  • Maintain constant communication with the entrant
  • Monitor the atmosphere
  • Perform non-entry rescue
  • Attend to the lifeline attached to the entrant, if used
  • Attend to the air line, if used
  • Prevent unauthorized entry
  • Remain outside the permit space unless relieved by another trained attendant

A rescue attendant must have awareness level training and hands-on training on all equipment used.
