Rescue Operations - Phase 3: Evacuation
The rescuer will need to make contact with the victim and provide air, if needed. Administering oxygen is not recommended due to the possibility of creating an oxygen-enriched environment.
If the victim is injured, the rescuer will have to decide whether to stabilize the victim in the confined space before removal or remove the victim immediately to avoid further exposure.
The rescuer will then package the victim, providing c-spine protection, if appropriate. Whenever possible, the rescuer should apply a harness or haul line to the victim.
If moving the victim through a small opening, the rescuer should remain on the exit side of the victim if possible to avoid blocking the exit.
