Retrieval Equipment
It is a good practice to use retrieval systems whenever an authorized entrant enters a permit space, unless the retrieval equipment would increase the overall risk of entry. Authorized entrants must wear a full body (Class 3) harness with a retrieval line attached. The other end of the retrieval line should be attached to a mechanical device or a fixed point outside of the permit space.
OSHA requires the use of a retrieval line and fall restraint when vertical entry of 5 feet or more above grade is made.
Anchoring devices include the following:
- Tripod
- Ladder rescue system (such as a jib, cantilever, ladder gin, aerial ladder)
- Beam trolley
- Winches and cables
- Rope and pulley systems
Note that when lifting entrants, powered equipment should never be used because resistance cannot be felt.
