Training of Rescue & Emergency Services

OSHA requires that each member of the rescue service practices permit-required confined space rescues at least once every 12 months. In addition, 29 CFR provides recommended rescue team evaluation criteria.

NFPA 1670 is not mandatory, but it establishes levels of operational capability and training requirements needed to conduct confined space rescue operations. The training levels consist of awareness, operational, and technical. Rescue services operating at the awareness level can only perform non-entry retrieval operations. The operational level rescue services can perform limited confined space rescues, and the technical level can perform confined space rescues and develop training and response implementation.
