Attachments
Forklift attachments extend the length and width of the forklift. Operators must be aware of how any attachment changes the forklift's operating clearance.
Attachments also add significant weight. It is crucial that operators know the weight of attachments and adjust the forklift load accordingly. An attachment that weighs 1,000 pounds reduces the capacity of the forklift load by the same amount. It is therefore also essential to know the weight of all forklift loads.
Attachments can also alter the forklift's center of gravity. An attachment that moves the load away from the vertical face of the forks will reduce the forklift's maximum load capacity.
Common attachments include the following:
- Slipsheet attachments to avoid the use of pallets
- Sideshifters to shift the forks right and left
- Container handlers to lift shipping containers
- Carton clamps equipped with a pressure valve to squeeze the load
- Cotton or pulp bale clamps to grab and hold bales
- Paper roll handlers
- Barrel clamps
- Rotators to grab and rotate the load
- Extending or telescoping forks, such as in reach and turret trucks
- Personnel platforms specially designed to lift personnel
Forklift operators should receive training on how to operate the attachments used in their workplaces.
