Controls
While forklift models differ, their controls are similar. Make sure you read the operator's manual for the specific PIT you will be operating for specific details about the particular control panel.
Directional controls: To move the forklift forwards or backwards, the operator uses the directional controls, which can be mounted on the steering column and operated by hand or controlled by shifting the accelerator pedal side to side with the foot.
Hydraulic lift controls: To raise and lower the forks and to tilt the forks, the operator uses the hydraulic controls.
Accelerator and brake pedals: To accelerate and brake, the operator uses foot pedals similar to those in a car. Some forklifts also have a clutch, which allows shifting into higher forward gears.
Inching pedal: To gain more control of the forklift in tight places, the operator uses the inching pedal, which moves the forklift forward in small degrees in order to control the approach to a load.
Parking brake: The operator should engage the parking brake whenever the forklift is unattended. However, the parking brake is not sufficient when parked on an incline. In that case, block the forklift wheels before leaving the vehicle.
