More Workplace Risks
Narrow aisle storage systems provide more storage space but limit the mobility of the reach trucks and order pickers that are needed in such facilities. Each type of truck incurs unique risks for operators.
- Reach trucks, which are used for storing material in multiple tiers high off the ground, are mainly at risk of being overloaded and consequently tipping over when lifting high.
- Order pickers, which are designed to lift the operator to retrieve items, are mainly a risk to the driver, who may fall while being lifted.
Air quality should be tested by employers, who should inform employees about such risks by educating employees and posting signs. Only use forklifts that have the correct designation for a location's air quality and atmospheric risk. The 11 forklift designations address various atmospheric limitations and specify vehicles qualified to operate in them.
- Concentration of fumes from forklifts with internal combustion engines is a risk, especially when doors and windows are closed in colder weather.
- Engines should be shut off when operating in a confined space like a truck trailer.
- Engines should be maintained to prevent excessive fume output.
- To shield employees from excessive exposure in environments where it cannot be avoided, employers may consider switching to battery-powered forklifts.
- To avoid a carbon monoxide buildup, employers should install monitors and train employees to recognize the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.
