Pre-Operation Inspections

Pre-operation inspections are a required safety measure. These inspections provide an opportunity to uncover problems with forklifts and PITs before an operator starts the equipment and begins work. Employers should provide operators with appropriate vehicle inspection checklists.

During the pre-operation inspection, check the following items with the key in the ignition but before turning the vehicle on:

  • Fluid levels: oil, water, and hydraulic fluid
  • Condition of the hydraulic hoses and mast chains for any leaks, cracks, or other visible defects
  • Tire condition and pressure
  • Condition of the forks, including the top clip retaining pin and heel
  • Load backrest extension
  • Finger guards

Also ensure that the following items are in order:

  • The information on the nameplate is present, legible, and matches the model and serial numbers and attachments.
  • The operator manual is on the vehicle and is legible.
  • The operator compartment is free of grease and debris.
  • All safety devices are working properly, including the seat belt.

Depending on the forklift type (electric or internal combustion, including liquid propane), also check the following:

  • Electric forklifts:
    • Cables and connectors for any frayed or exposed wires
    • Battery restraints
    • Electrolyte levels (wear personal protective equipment during this inspection)
    • Hood latch
  • Internal combustion forklifts:
    • Engine oil
    • Brake reservoir
    • Engine coolant
    • Air filter
    • Belts and hoses
    • Radiator
    • Hood latch
  • Liquid propane forklifts:
    • Properly mounted tank
    • Pressure relief valve pointing up
    • Hose and connectors
    • Tank restraint brackets
    • Dents and cracks in the tank
    • How the tank fits within profile of truck
    • Leaks

Always use personal protective equipment, such as a face shield, long sleeves, and gauntlet gloves, when you are checking liquid propane tanks and fittings.
