Working in the Forklift

Operating a forklift requires you to be aware of many elements at once. Learning to pay attention to your vehicle, its load, the standing materials around you, and the people in your environment takes practice and constant attention. Keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Forklifts are heavier than cars and require more stopping time. Never drive at a speed that prevents a safe stopping distance. Err on the side of caution.
  • Slow down for wet and slippery floors.
  • Look in the direction of, and keep a clear view of, the path of travel.
  • Slow down and sound the horn at intersections (such as, at the end of a warehouse aisle) and other locations where vision is obstructed. If the load you are carrying obstructs your forward view, you must travel with the load trailing you.
  • Ascend and descend hills and grades slowly.
  • When ascending or descending grades in excess of 10 percent, drive loaded trucks with the load on the upgrade side.

Always observe the following safety precautions:

  • Never place arms or legs between the uprights of the mast or outside the running lines of the truck.
  • Do not permit any person to stand or pass under the elevated portion of any truck, whether loaded or empty.
