NFPA Labeling System
The NFPA labeling system is a fire protection hazard warning system designed to help emergency responders in emergency conditions, such as fires and chemical spills. NFPA labels contain information on acute health hazards, physical hazards, flammability, and special characteristics that might require special firefighting techniques, such as reactivity with water. Workplaces that store or use materials requiring special handling under emergency situations may find the NFPA's system more useful. This labeling system was developed by the National Fire Protection Association. It includes labels and a numerical rating system like the HMIS labeling system, but the basic purpose of the label information is different.
It should be noted that OSHA does not require use of either the HMIS or NFPA 704 systems. Employers have the flexibility to use any labeling system as long as it satisfies OSHA's requirements for labels and other forms of warning found in 29 CFR 1910.1200(f).
