Toxics Release Inventory
Companies in certain industry sectors employing 10 or more full-time equivalent employees that manufacture, process, or use more than a certain minimum amount of any of a long list of toxic chemicals are required to submit a form each year to the EPA detailing how much of each chemical was emitted or disposed of during the preceding year. The EPA makes that information public in a database called the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). This database has been very effective in convincing manufacturers to put serious effort into waste reduction.
