Arc Welding & Cutting Unusual Service Conditions
OSHA regulations make note of some unusual service conditions that operators may encounter when arc welding or cutting. In the following circumstances, machines must be designed to safely meet the requirements of service:
- Exposure to unusually corrosive fumes
- Exposure to steam or excessive humidity
- Exposure to excessive oil vapor
- Exposure to flammable gases
- Exposure to abnormal vibration or shock
- Exposure to excessive dust
- Exposure to weather
- Exposure to unusual seacoast or shipboard conditions
For emergency purposes, a disconnecting switch or controller must be provided at or near each welding machine if it is not equipped with such a switch or controller mounted as an integral part of the machine itself. A disconnect switch with overload protection or an equivalent disconnect and protection method must be provided for each outlet intended for connection to a portable welding machine. Any method of disconnect must be compliant with Subpart S of 29 CFR 1910.
