Fire/Explosions

Fire/explosions are the most obvious hazards when performing hot work. Avoiding personal injury should be the primary concern of all hot work operators; however, it is also important to consider the possibility of property damage before attempting hot work.

OSHA requires fire extinguishing equipment to be maintained in a state of readiness for immediate use in areas where ignition sources or other fire hazards exist. Approved equipment may consist of water pails, buckets of sand, water hoses, or portable extinguishers depending upon the nature and quantity of the combustible material exposed.

Following proper hot work procedure is especially important when working in confined spaces as an accumulation of flammable gases may occur much faster than in a non-confined environment. Proper ventilation is important for reducing the chances of hazardous gas accumulation. We will discuss additional rules governing ventilation and hot work in confined spaces later in the course.
