Grinding

Grinding is a process that requires proper training like all other forms of hot work. It is similar to cutting in that it is typically used to remove excess metals and other materials from a base piece. However, the tools differ greatly from oxygen-fuel gas or arc welding. Grinding makes use of an abrasive, coarse material that contacts the metal's surface at great speed and "grinds" down the metal.

The process of grinding sometimes produces a shower of sparks, which is why it is required to be treated with the same level of care as any other type of hot work. Grinding also produces the additional hazard of cutting or crushing an errantly placed hand or other body part.
