Key Terms

Adsorption is the adhesion of atoms, ions, molecules of gas, liquids, or dissolved solids to a surface.

Freeze burn occurs when workers are exposed to liquid hydrogen, which is stored at temperatures below minus 423° Fahrenheit.

Fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat, and water.

Inerting is a system that decreases the probability of combustion of flammable materials stored in a confined space, especially a fuel tank, by maintaining a chemically non-reactive or "inert" gas like nitrogen in such a space. "Inerted" fuel tanks may be used on land, or aboard ships or aircraft.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is used to protect workers from hydrogen hazards. This equipment includes full face shields, safety glasses, insulated or leather gloves, long-sleeved shirts, and pants without cuffs.

Purging is when gaseous and liquid hydrogen systems are cleared of air, oxygen, or other oxidizers prior to admitting hydrogen to the system, and purged of hydrogen before opening the systems to the atmosphere.
