Applicable Regulations

As hydrogen is used more frequently as a fuel source, federal agencies have recognized the need to take more proactive measures to protect the safety and health of the increased numbers of workers in this industry. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the agency responsible for the safety and health of workers involved in the hydrogen fuel cell industry. Employers must follow OSHA's General Industry standards (29 CFR 1910.103). Hydrogen fuel cell industry employers must also follow federal and state regulations that apply to different elements of their operations. For example, employers must comply with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations that govern the hydrogen industry. The DOE is working to identify those codes and standards, to facilitate the development of such standards, and to support publicly available research and certification investigations that are necessary to develop a basis for such codes and standards.
