Hearing Protection Selection

Hearing protection selection must take into account noise intensity, comfort, and other PPE that must be worn (goggles, hard hat, face shield, etc.)

Hearing protectors have a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR), a standardized measurement of noise reduction in a lab setting. NRR is a relative estimate, and should be considered more of a guideline of how much noise reduction it will provide to an individual (i.e. it is not an actual performance value; think of NRR like a gas mileage estimate).

In reality, experts state an NRR is only about approximately half of what is listed for the hearing protector.
