Wearing & Maintaining Hearing Protection

Hearing protectors can also limit the wearer's ability to hear and communicate, which can cause problems dealing with alarms, important messages, high-traffic areas, and emergency situations. Some earmuffs and helmets/headgear will have built-in communication devices.

Since there are a wide variety of hearing protectors, there are specific instructions for each type on how to properly wear and maintain them. It is outside the scope of this course to cover use and maintenance.

An employer must provide training in the use and care of all hearing protectors provided to employees, and ensure proper initial fitting. The employer must supervise the correct use of all hearing protectors.

Other government agencies can also have standards that affect workplace noise. Your employer will inform you of any additional regulations that you must follow.
