Acclimatization

Acclimatization is the process of gradually introducing the body to high temperatures and humidity while performing activities. Acclimatization increases the body's core temperature in hot environments gradually, rather than exposing the worker to prolonged periods in hot temperatures. This is beneficial because it encourages the body to sweat earlier and in greater quantities. Changing perspiration reactions helps combat heat-related stress by cooling the body more efficiently, because the body learns to sweat at higher and higher temperatures.

This process should be carried out in all workers in high temperatures and humidity, as it is one of the most effective ways to prevent heat-related stress and illness. The acclimatization process is especially critical for new workers. The acclimatization process can take from two days to a few weeks to be fully effective; however, the average length of the acclimatization process is five to seven days.

Workers will experience the highest degree of discomfort during the first day of heat exposure. The exposure will affect the body temperature, pulse, and respiratory system of the worker. These responses will decrease in severity over time and with gradual exposure.
