Employee Responsibilities

Because there are no OSHA regulations for employers or employees working in high temperatures, there must be adequate preparation and education before beginning work, and communication while on the job. Workers are responsible for ensuring that they are aware of this information, for applying it, and for notifying supervisors in case of an emergency.

Workers who are exposed to high temperatures and humidity can protect themselves by taking the following measures to ensure that they are prepared for a day in the heat:

  • Hydrate consistently 24 hours before beginning work.
  • Plan to wear loose-fitted clothing, sunscreen, and headwear to protect against direct sunlight.
  • Review workloads, work times, and rest times.
  • Become familiar with water stations and shaded areas.
  • Understand the signs and symptoms of heat-related stress.
  • Identify a buddy on the worksite to communicate physical or mental signs of heat-related stress.
  • Identify the supervisor to notify in case of an emergency.
  • Discuss the course of action to be taken in the event of a heat-related emergency.
