First Aid & Emergency Response Measures

First aid is a helpful tool that employers and employees can use to assist those who are affected by heat-related stress or illnesses while on the worksite. It is imperative to act quickly and properly in emergency situations.

Evaluate the following chart to learn about the first aid measure to be taken in each heat-related illness situation. Remember that heatstroke is a medical emergency that can result in death if not treated. Call 911 whenever heatstroke is suspected.

  • Heat rash
    1. Move to a cooler, less humid environment.
    2. Keep the affected area dry.
  • Heat cramps
    1. Move the worker to a shady, cool area.
    2. Provide cool water and beverages.
    3. Wait a few hours before resuming strenuous activity.
    4. Seek medical attention if cramps do not subside.
  • Heat exhaustion
    1. Have the worker sit or lie down in a cool and shaded area.
    2. Provide plenty of water.
    3. Cool the worker with cold compresses or ice packs.
    4. Bring the worker to a clinic or emergency room if the worker's symptoms do not improve within 1 hour.
    5. Do no resume work that day.
  • Heatstroke
    1. Call 911.
    2. Place the worker in shaded, cool area.
    3. Loosen the worker's clothing, and remove the outer clothing.
    4. Fan air on the worker.
    5. Provide fluids.
    6. Stay with worker until help arrives.
