Fluid Replacement & Recovery Areas

Employers are required to provide a shaded recovery area for workers to relocate to during peak temperature hours or during rest schedules. Water stations containing drinkable, cool water are also to be provided to workers. Both the water station and recovery areas are to be in close proximity to workers, and both locations must accommodate the work force for the duration of the work and rest period.

To ensure an effective recovery area, choose or create rest areas with as many of the following beneficial characteristics as possible:

  • Complete shade
  • Cool work surfaces
  • North-facing walls
  • Open to breezes
  • Safe from other factors, such as traffic, falling objects, and excessive noise

It is also recommended that recovery areas are a place where workers and supervisors can take note of each other's physiological states. This is a great opportunity to communicate with team members to make sure that all workers are well hydrated. If the workforce appears to be struggling with the heat, this is the place and time to adjust the work schedule.
