Fluid Types
Hydration is a critically important factor to ensure that workers are protected from dehydration and heat-related stress and illness. OSHA states that the leading causes of heat-related illnesses are high temperatures and humidity, low fluid consumption, direct sun exposure, limited air movement, and physical exertion.
Salt loss is a critical process that causes a variety of heat-related complications. Sports drinks or nutrition beverages, like Pedialyte, can help replenish these salts. However, it is advised that workers hydrate primarily with cool, fresh, and palatable water. Water is to be consumed at regular intervals and in small amounts. OSHA also recommends that one liter of water is consumed per hour, which is one cup every fifteen minutes.
Alcohol and caffeinated beverages are to be avoided, as they increase the effects of dehydration. These amplified effects can increase the rate and severity of heat-related stress reactions and illnesses.
