Reactivity
Reactive wastes can be among the most dangerous hazardous wastes. The EPA allows waste handlers to use their best judgement in determining if a waste is sufficiently reactive to be regulated. However, reactive wastes exhibit the following common characteristics:
- They are unstable and routinely experience violent changes without detonation.
- They have the potential for explosive or violent reactions when they are combined with water.
- They release toxic gases when they are mixed with water.
A waste may be considered reactive if the container label or SDS indicates any of the following properties:
- Oxidizer
- Pyrophoric
- Water reactive
- Organic peroxide
- Unstable (reactive)
- Explosive
