Recognizing Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste is waste with a chemical composition or other properties that make it capable of causing illness, death, or some other harm to humans and other life forms when that waste is mismanaged or released into the environment. Hazardous wastes can be liquids, solids, or contained gases. Recognizing hazardous waste is paramount to the health and safety of workers and anyone else placed at risk by that waste. When workers can identify hazardous waste, they can minimize their exposure to it, wear the appropriate PPE, and help protect the work site and the surrounding environment.
