Statistics
The amount of hazardous waste produced each year continues to rise and impact both individuals and the environment. Note the following statistics:
- More than 400 million tons (that is, 0.4 billion tons) of hazardous waste are produced globally each year. That amounts to 13 tons each second.
- In 2012, hazardous waste accidents caused nearly $16 million in property damage alone and forced 22,757 people to evacuate.
- 1,133 people died in 2012 as a result of hazardous waste accidents.
- Only 6 percent of all hazardous waste accidents were the result of natural causes in 2012. This means that someone was legally liable for 94 percent of hazardous waste accidents during that year.
