Toxicity

The EPA considers ignitability, corrosivity, and reactivity as presenting immediate, first-hand dangers to both individuals and the environment. Hazardous wastes that are toxic, however, have long-term effects on humans and the environment. The EPA lists a number of elements and compounds that may cause a waste material to exhibit characteristics of toxicity. These items include the following:

  • Heavy metals, such as arsenic, chromium, lead, mercury, and silver
  • Organic compounds, such as 2,4-D, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and vinyl chloride
  • Materials found in common items, such as batteries, expired black and white photo fixers, fluorescent tubes, and various other electronic devices
