Application Personnel
Personnel who may be in the vicinity of a laser and its beam path, such as maintenance personnel, service personnel, operators, and visitors, can influence the hazard evaluation, and the LSO may consider adopting additional control measures. For certain laser systems, the principal hazard control lies with the operator, whose responsibility is to avoid aiming the laser at personnel or reflective surfaces. The LSO should consider the following additional parameters when evaluating hazards and implementing control measures:
- Maturity of judgment of the operator
- Level of safety training and experience of the operator
- Awareness on the part of bystanders
- Degree of training in laser safety of all individuals involved in the laser operation
- Reliability of individuals to follow SOPs and recommended control procedures
- Number of individuals and their locations relative to the beam path
- Other hazards not due to laser radiation that may cause the individuals to react unexpectedly or influence the use of personal protective equipment.
