Beam Hazards

The most important safety concern when it comes to injuries from lasers is the possibility of being exposed to the beam of a laser without protective eyewear, body shielding, or clothing. The types of injuries that can occur will vary based on the type of laser and the length of the laser pulse.

The LSO is responsible for defining the Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) for the type of laser being used in the workplace. The LSO must also provide and instruct on the proper use of personal safety equipment workers must wear and the safety procedures workers must follow while working within the NHZ.
