Guidelines to Reduce Collateral & Plasma Radiation

There are two types of controls to protect against collateral and plasma radiation:

  • Distance - the intensity of electromagnetic energy decreases with distance.
  • Shielding - an effective control for optical, microwave, radio-frequency, and power-frequency electric fields. Plastics, such as polycarbonate, can be used for shielding against visible and some infrared wavelengths. Microwaves and electric fields may be shielded with conductive materials. Personal protective equipment for the eyes and skin can be used to shield against optical radiation. Low-frequency RF and power-frequency magnetic fields may require the use of special shielding materials such as alloys containing nickel or cobalt.
