Guidelines to Reduce Electrical & Fire Hazards

The LSO must ensure that workers involved in maintenance or operation of high-voltage lasers are trained in electrical safety and in proper lockout-tagout procedures, including the following:

  • Ensure class 3B and 4 lasers have a separate circuit and local cut-off switch (breaker) for the circuit.
  • Label and post electrical high voltage hazards and switches.
  • Clearly identify the main switches to cut-off power.
  • De-energize the machine before working on a laser.
  • Positively disconnect the laser; if there is more than one source of power, disconnect them all. Lock out and tag the disconnect switches so that power is not reconnected while you are working on the laser.
  • Have at least two persons in the area while working on high-energy power systems.
  • Keep flammable materials away from open beams.
  • If unprotected plastic tubing or wire insulation is present, it must be appropriately shielded using non-flammable materials.
