Hazard Class 2

Class 2 lasers emit radiation in the visible portion of the spectrum (0.4 to 0.7 µm). The aversion response (automatic closing of the eyes and turning away of the head) is considered adequate eye protection. Some examples of Class 2 lasers are:

  • Barcode scanner
  • Red light laser pointer
  • Laser tag guns

Class 2 lasers are only hazardous if the viewer overcomes his or her natural aversion response to bright light and continuously stares into the source (similar to staring at the sun with the unprotected eye).

Therefore, precautions should be taken to prevent continuous staring into the direct beam. Momentary (less than 0.25 second) exposure occurring in an unintentional viewing situation is not considered hazardous. However, a Class 2M laser system is potentially hazardous if viewed with certain optical aids.

The CAUTION warning label for a Class 2 laser should appear similar to the label pictured.
