Hazard Class 4
A Class 4 laser is considered a high-powered laser or laser system. Class 4 lasers can produce a hazard not only from direct viewing or specular reflection, but also from a reflection that is scattered in many different directions (diffuse reflection). In addition, such lasers may produce fire and skin hazards. They may also produce laser generated contaminants (LGAC) and hazardous plasma radiation. Class 4 lasers include all lasers in excess of Class 3 limitations. Class 4 lasers have an output power greater than 500 mW (half a watt). There is no upper restriction on output power.
Some uses of Class 4 lasers include:
- laser light shows
- laser surgery
- laser metal cutters
In most states it is illegal to sell preassembled Class 4 lasers; however, a citizen can construct a Class 4 laser for personal use. Class 4 lasers must be equipped with a key switch and a safety interlock.
The DANGER label for a Class 4 laser should appear similar to the label pictured.
