Hazard Considerations
Lasers are divided into two operating classifications: continuous and pulsed. A continuous wave (CW) laser outputs the laser power at one steadily-averaged frequency. A pulsed mode laser operates with bursts of output at regular intervals. There are subcategories of the two main classifications, depending upon the bandwidth of the laser output and the desired effect of the laser energy.
When determining the laser classification and MPE, the LSO must take the following parameters into account:
- Wavelength
- For CW lasers: maximum power output and exposure duration
- For pulsed lasers: pulse duration, pulse repetition frequency, and emergent beam radiance
