Introduction

Since the early 1970s, the laser has found many applications in industrial fields. Lasers have been used in communication, surveying, drilling, welding, and the automotive industry. Lasers benefit engineering applications because of their power, precision, and speed. However, lasers produce high intensity light beams, which can cause serious and sometimes permanent eye damage. Lasers can also cause severe burns to the skin and can produce an atmospheric hazard when chemicals or biological elements are vaporized from exposure to the laser. Serious injuries and even deaths have been caused by improperly wired or grounded equipment.

For this reason, a designated Laser Safety Officer is required for work with certain lasers. This person must be familiar with the government and industry standards that have been developed to protect workers by providing guidance on appropriate work procedures, necessary protective equipment, and proper design of lasers.
