Laser Application Environment - Indoor
If the beam is enclosed or operated in a controlled area, then only the laser is considered when evaluating an indoor laser operation. If there is a potential for the exposure of unprotected personnel, consider all optics, including mirrors, lenses, fiber optics, etc. that are a permanent part of the laser beam path. The following steps describe the procedure for evaluating the NHZ of a laser in an indoor environment:
- Determine and evaluate the NHZ of all possible beam paths.
- Determine the NHZ for specular reflections.
- Determine the extent of hazardous diffuse reflections if the laser beam is focused.
- Determine the likelihood of operation or maintenance personnel being within the NHZ during operation.
- Determine whether optical aids will be used within 10 cm of a highly diverging beam.
- Determine whether other hazards exist.
