Laser Uses
In industrial settings, lasers are used for cutting, drilling, welding, engraving, micromachining, and more. The most common industrial laser application is laser cutting. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-powered laser at the material to be cut. The material either melts, burns, or vaporizes away, leaving an edge with a high-quality finish. Similar to cutting, lasers can also be used to drill holes in materials. Lasers are efficient at drilling holes at shallow angles, and this process is often used in the automotive and aircraft industries. Laser welding provides a concentrated heat source, which allows for narrow, deep welds at high welding rates. In the pharmaceutical and food manufacturing industries, lasers are often used for marking and engraving items such as pills and hard-shell confectionary products.
