Laser Safety Officer
Lasers should be operated with great caution. When a workplace utilizes lasers that could be considered a safety hazard, management has a duty to appoint a Laser Safety Officer, implement a workplace laser safety program, and ensure that all employees are trained in laser safety.
The Laser Safety Officer (LSO) is defined as the one who has the authority and responsibility to monitor and enforce the control of laser hazards and effect the knowledgeable evaluation and control of laser hazards.
A LSO is required for the operation, maintenance, and service of Class 3B or Class 4 lasers or laser systems. The operation and maintenance of Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3R lasers do not normally require the designation of an LSO. Class 1M and Class 2M may require the designation of an LSO, depending on the application.
