Non-Beam Hazards
Non-beam hazards are those that do not result from direct human exposure to laser beams. They include biological, chemical, and physical agents. Due to the diversity of non-beam hazards, the LSO may employ safety or industrial hygiene personnel for evaluations.
One study found that during a one year time span, approximately 17 percent of injuries from the use of lasers were due to non-beam hazards. Non-beam hazards can fall into several categories. The ANSI Overview Z136.1 standard details the following categories:
- Electrical hazards
- Collateral and plasma radiation
- Fire hazards
- Explosion hazards
- Mechanical hazards associated with robotics
- Noise
- Laser-generated airborne contaminants
- Compressed gases
- Laser dyes and solvents
- Assist gases
- Biological agents
- Human factors
