Supervisor Responsibilities

A laser supervisor is an individual who supervises or manages employees who work with greater than Class 1 laser radiation. Even though the laser supervisor may not have direct laser operating experience, he or she should have a basic understanding of laser safety requirements and work closely with the LSO. A laser supervisor has the following responsibilities:

  • Issue appropriate instructions and training materials on laser hazards and their controls to all personnel who may work with lasers that are operated within the supervisor's jurisdiction.
  • Only permit the operation of a laser if there are adequate controls.
  • Submit the names of individuals scheduled to work with lasers to the LSO.
  • Submit any information requested by the LSO for medical surveillance or training requirements.
  • Report any accidents or suspected accidents resulting from a laser in his or her jurisdictional authority to the LSO immediately and implement the organization's accident response plan if necessary.
  • Assist in obtaining medical attention for any employee involved in a laser accident.
  • Submit any installations or modifications to Class 3B or Class 4 lasers to the LSO.
  • Provide SOPs to the users of Class 3B and Class 4 lasers and be familiar with the SOPs.
  • Request approval from the LSO for the operation of any new or modified Class 3B or Class 4 lasers.
