Common MSD Injuries

MSDs can affect most parts of the body, including the arms, hands, wrists, fingers, back, neck, shoulders, and legs. However, the most frequent workplace MSDs affect the arms and back.

Tendon disorders are the most common work-related MSDs to the arm. These include tendinitis, trigger finger, De Quervain's disease, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Symptoms can include a dull aching sensation, discomfort with certain movements, tenderness, and pain.

Other than colds and the flu, back disorders are the most common reported reason for missing work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 42 percent of MSD cases were for back injuries, with an average of seven days for the employee to recuperate. Most back problems are caused by pulled or strained muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Sciatica is an example of a serious back disorder caused by a bulging or ruptured disc in the lower back that produces pain in the lower back, legs, and feet.
