Forceful Exertion

Force is the amount of muscular effort used to perform work. This includes pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting objects. Exerting large amounts of force can result in fatigue and injury. High forces may lead to irritation, inflammation, strains, and torn muscles, tendons, and other tissues.

Generally, the greater the force, the greater the risk of injury. However, the degree of risk from forceful exertion depends on the following factors:

  • Shape, weight, dimensions, and bulkiness of the load
  • Grip type and position
  • Length of time continuous force is applied
  • Number of times the load is handled
  • Posture
  • Vibration
  • Environmental conditions
