Static Posture
Static posture refers to physical exertion in which the same posture is held throughout the exertion. These types of exertions put increased force on the muscles and lead to fatigue. This occurs because the lack of movement impedes the blood flow that is needed to bring nutrients to the muscles and remove wastes from the tissues. The longer or more frequently static posture occurs, the greater the risk of injury due to overuse of muscles, joints, and other tissues.
Static posture can occur in standing or sitting positions. It is important for workers to have recovery time from static postures so that fatigued muscles have time to relax. Examples of static work include sitting at a computer or standing at a cash register.
Injuries from static posture can be reduced by using the following:
- Footrails
- Sit or stand stools
- Anti-fatigue mats
- Shoes with cushioned insoles or soles
