Vibration

Vibration is the oscillatory motion of a physical object. Hand-arm vibration exposure occurs when the use of machines and power tools such as sanders, grinders, chippers, routers, drills, and chain saws, is continuous or at a very high intensity. If you are exposed to enough vibration, it can cause damage to the nerves and blood vessels in your hands and arms. It can also cause muscles to tighten up, which increases the risk for injury. Symptoms of prolonged hand-arm vibration exposure include fatigue, pain, numbness, tingling, increased sensitivity to cold, and decreased sensitivity to touch in the fingers, hands, and arms.

A few ways to lower the risk of hand-arm vibration include:

  • Using anti-vibration gloves
  • Separating the vibration from the user
  • Using tools with low vibration
  • Altering the motion or speed of tools

Whole-body vibration occurs while sitting or standing on vibrating work surfaces such as vibrating vehicles, equipment, and platforms. Symptoms of whole-body vibration exposure include general discomfort and lower-back pain. Vibration energy can disrupt blood flow and affect the nervous system. Workers who stand on vibrating surfaces absorb most of the vibration energy in their legs, particularly the knees.

Reduce exposure to whole-body vibration by following these tips:

  • Make sure that the suspension components of the machinery are properly maintained.
  • Ensure that the driver's seat provides good support.
  • Select the proper machine or vehicle for the task and ground surface.
  • Check the tire pressure to make sure it is right for the ground surface.
