Gases, Dyes, & Solvents

It is important to consider the potential hazards associated with compressed gases, cryogenic materials, toxic and carcinogenic materials, and noise.

Gases

The compressed gases often used as laser medium materials may be dangerous if there is damage to the material container which causes an explosion or propels the tank forcefully. Gas released into the working environment may displace the breathable air in the room, creating the danger of asphyxia for nearby workers. Adequate ventilation must be in place to reduce noxious or potentially hazardous fumes and vapors produced by laser welding, cutting, and other target interactions, to levels below the appropriate TLVs.

Dyes and Solvents

Laser dyes are complex fluorescent organic compounds that, when in solution with certain solvents, form a lasing medium for dye lasers. Certain dyes are highly toxic or carcinogenic. The LSO must ensure that all individuals who work with laser dyes and solvents receive appropriate training on hazardous material handling, storage, and disposal.
