Maintenance

The LSO is responsible for ensuring that only technicians trained in laser service perform maintenance of Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems. Alignment of laser optical systems, including mirrors and lenses, should prevent direct or diffuse beam exposure above the MPE. The manufacturer should provide written policies and procedures detailing alignment methods, which the LSO reviews and approves. Note that the use of low power, visible lasers for path simulation of higher power lasers are recommended for both invisible and high power, visible laser systems.

Create a temporary laser-controlled area when performing maintenance that requires the removal of protective housings or the overriding of protective interlocks and the accessible laser radiation exceeds the MPE. Post a notice sign outside the temporary laser-controlled area to warn others of the hazard.
