Training
As part of an adequate laser safety program, training is required for the following personnel:
- LSO
- Laser users, particularly of Class 3B and Class 4 lasers
- Laser operators
- Technical support staff
Safety training programs must provide these personnel with a thorough understanding of all procedures required for establishing and maintaining a safe environment during the use of laser systems. Training programs should be specific to the laser systems in use, the procedures to be performed, and in accordance with all federal, state, and facility policies. All supervisors and users must successfully complete the NIH Laser Safety training before using a Class 3B or Class 4 laser or laser system.
Adequate training is required for all technical support staff, including both in-house and contracted staff. Training for equipment service personnel should include:
- An emphasis on the practical techniques and procedures necessary when hazards are increased, such as when portions of a laser system's protective housing is removed for optical alignment
- Information about all potential electrical hazards of the equipment
- Information about the hazards related to eye and skin exposure from both direct and reflected beams
Note that even though equipment service personnel are not required to receive in-depth training on the safety aspects of lasers, they must understand and comply with all facility policies regarding safety, documentation, and other related activities.
In addition to the training requirements for all support staff, training programs for LSOs should cover the following topics:
- Details about practical procedures and equipment
- A basic understanding of federal, state, and local requirements
- The concepts and applicability of manufacturer-certified and classified lasers
- The procedures for performing safety audits
