Qualified Climber

If a company has a fixed ladder that is occasionally used, they may set up a Qualified Climber Program. Qualified climbers are certified after successfully satisfying the physical requirements and completing a hands-on training program.

A qualified climber has in-depth knowledge of the hazards and equipment associated with climbing. Their classroom training should cover the safety equipment used, safe climbing methods, and how to perform the work tasks associated with the climb. After classroom training and observation of other qualified climbers, the climber must demonstrate climbs without fall protections. Qualified climbers who make at least one climb a year are required to be recertified every three years. A qualified climber who has not climbed for a one-year period is required to be recertified.
