Straight Ladders

A straight ladder, also referred to as a single ladder, is a non-self-supporting portable ladder that is not adjustable in length and consists of only one section. Single ladders consist of the side rails, the rungs, steps, or cleats, and the feet. Single ladders rated for heavy-duty use can range in length of up to 30 feet, measured along the side rail. Single ladders rated for medium-duty use are available up to 24 feet, and light-duty rated ladders cannot exceed 16 feet.

A single ladder must extend one to three feet above an access point. If the worker intends to cross an access point, such as stepping off a single ladder and onto a roof, the ladder must be secured to the access point.

Single ladders may be used on uneven surfaces if ladder levelers are used. The pitch should be as close to 75 degrees from the horizontal as possible. This pitch provides the optimum resistance against the bottom surface, strength of the ladder, and balance of the climber.
